The best first wine day from Porto. 2. Premium Small Group

The upgrade for better pacing, better wine and fewer people than a coach. The premium tours keep the group small and add what a standard day leaves out: collection from your hotel, older Ports, a sommelier, or lunch at a better table.

It collects you from your hotel, puts no more than eight people in each van, and includes a vintage Port tasting, lunch at a premium restaurant and a one-hour cruise. It takes adults over 16 only.

A premium day is the better fit if you already know you like wine and want to taste more of it, or if a 7:30 walk to a meeting point is the part of the day you would most like to avoid. If you mainly want to see the valley, #1 gives you the same view for less.

3. Private Douro Tour

Best for choosing your own wineries, and for special occasions. On a private tour the guide, the vehicle and the pace are yours. That is useful when you want a particular estate, when your group includes children or someone who does not drink, or when the day is a birthday or an anniversary and you would rather not spend it with strangers.

• For two people: the Private Douro Valley Tour with Cruise and Wine is the same $286 per person, 5.0★ from 69 reviews. It includes hotel pickup, two wineries and a river cruise; lunch is extra, and each booking is limited to two people.

These three need more planning, and in return you set the pace. None of them is a single booking: you put the day together from a train ticket, a winery visit, a boat trip or a hire car.

4. Pinhão by Train

The best independent day on a budget. The Douro line runs from Porto São Bento along the river to Pinhão in about two hours and a quarter, and the last stretch follows the water through the terraces. Pinhão is the one place in the valley where the station, a winery, restaurants and short river trips are all within walking distance of each other.

Check the current CP timetable before you go, because the return train decides how long you can stay. 5. Peso da Régua

Best for the history of Port and the wineries at the western end of the valley. Régua is the bigger town, downriver from Pinhão at the other end of the N222 and a stop on the same train line. It holds the Museu do Douro, which explains the 1756 demarcation of the region and how the terraces were built better than anywhere else in the valley. Estates such as Quinta do Vallado and Quinta da Pacheca are close to the town.

6. Self-Drive Douro

Best for viewpoints and villages, if someone in your group will not drink. A car lets you stop wherever the view opens up, and the best viewpoints in the Douro are ones no tour bus can reach: Casal de Loivos on the ridge above Pinhão, the Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura above Régua, and the wine village of Provesende, about twenty minutes’ climb above Pinhão.

The road between Régua and Pinhão is the N222, named the world’s best road to drive by Avis in 2015, largely for its 93 bends. It is also narrow, with tight switchbacks and no shoulder in places, and this is a wine region. Whoever drives should not be tasting. Most quintas are not walk-in venues either, so book every winery visit before you set off. The last two are for readers who have already done the Douro, or who want something other than two wineries and a lunch.

7. Vinho Verde

The best second wine day, and the best for white-wine lovers. Vinho Verde is Portugal’s other big wine region, covering the green Minho between the Douro and the Spanish border. Its wines are mostly white, dry and fresh, the opposite of Port, so a day here makes a real contrast with a Douro day. If Alvarinho is what you want to taste, the Monção e Melgaço sub-region is the place, about an hour and three-quarters north of Porto by car. Avesso grows closer, around Baião and Amarante.

The best-reviewed day that includes Vinho Verde also includes the Douro. 8. Porto-to-Douro River Day

Best if the river journey matters more to you than the wineries. A few tours spend most of the day on the water, sailing between Porto and Régua or Pinhão through the river’s dam locks, with meals on board and a bus or train for the other direction. You see more of the river and taste less wine, and their ratings are lower than the road tours.

If you want the river without giving up the wineries, an hour on the water from Pinhão is part of most road tours. Half vs Full Day

Use half a day for Gaia or one nearby wine experience; use a full day for the Douro’s vineyard country.

Half a day in Porto. The Port lodges are across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, a walk over the Dom Luís I Bridge from Ribeira. Half a day in the Douro. Half-day Douro tours exist, but the drive is the same length as on a full day, 70 to 105 minutes each way on the itineraries that give a time. A half-day to the Douro makes sense when the other half of your day is already taken. If you can give it the whole day, the second winery and the lunch are what make the drive pay off.
