Douro River Cruises & the Douro Train in Winter: What Runs After October (2026/27)
Planning a Douro river cruise or train trip in winter? What runs from November 2026 to March 2027: full-day cruises, Pinhão rabelo boats, the Six Bridges cruise, CP trains and the rail works.
Quick answer: From November to March, the big full-day Douro cruises (Porto–Régua, Porto–Pinhão) and CP’s Historic Douro Train mostly don’t run. Short boat trips do: the one-hour rabelo boat in Pinhão (from €15, all year) and Porto’s Six Bridges cruise (from €18, daily). CP regional trains run all winter, but in 2025/26 a section of the Linha do Douro was replaced by buses for five months, and another winter closure is planned for 2026/27. Your safest winter choices are a Douro day tour that includes a boat trip, or a train-and-quinta day in Pinhão.
If you have found a “Porto to Régua river cruise” for 12 December, stop before you pay. Unless the listing clearly confirms that date, it almost certainly isn’t sailing. This guide covers what runs when, from November 2026 to March 2027, and what to book instead.

Based on operator pages checked in early October 2026. Weather, high water and minimum passenger numbers can cancel any departure, so confirm when booking.
In winter, the river belongs to short sightseeing boats, not day-long cruises through the locks. Plan your day around Pinhão or Porto, not around a Porto–Régua boat.
The Historic Douro Train in 2026, and what replaces it in winter
CP’s Comboio Histórico do Douro runs from 6 June to 18 October 2026: 51 trips between Régua and Tua, on Saturdays, Sundays and some Wednesdays. Roteiro do Douro lists the Wednesday runs from 22 July to 30 September. Tickets cost €60 for adults and €32 for children aged 4–12, sold at CP ticket offices and on cp.pt.
For the second year running, a 1400-series diesel locomotive from the 1960s in its original blue livery pulls the train, not the 1925 steam engine. Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) placed preventive restrictions on the line in 2025 that rule out steam haulage. The five early-20th-century carriages seat 254 people, and the round trip takes about three hours, with Port tastings, folk music and stops at Pinhão and Tua.
After 18 October it stops. We found no Christmas, New Year or winter historic train for 2026/27, either steam or diesel. If anything is announced, it will appear on cp.pt, so check there and treat any third-party “winter steam train” listing with suspicion.
What replaces it in winter:
- The regular CP regional train on the same tracks. The scenery between Régua, Pinhão and Tua is the same, and the ticket costs a fraction of the price (see the CP section below).
- A Pinhão day by train with a one-hour rabelo boat (see the sample day).
- A guided Douro day tour with a boat trip and lunch, which keeps working when trains or the weather don’t cooperate.
If you want the train built into a guided day, the Douro Valley Full-Day Boat, Train, and Lunch Tour ($140, 4.7/5 from more than 1,900 reviews) combines a train ride, a boat trip, lunch and a winery visit. Ask the operator how the winter rail works affect the train leg before you book.
Full-day Porto–Régua and Pinhão cruises: season dates by operator
The headline Douro cruise sails upstream from Porto, passes through the Crestuma-Lever lock (14 m) and the Carrapatelo lock, where the water level changes by about 35 m at a 57 m-tall dam, and reaches Régua mid-afternoon. Trips that continue to Pinhão also pass the Bagaúste (Régua) dam, about 27–28 m. Operators all give the same reason for stopping in winter. Roteiro do Douro puts it plainly: “The regular cruise season starts in mid-March and ends in November. In the remaining months the dams are closed for maintenance so it is not possible to pass through the locks.” Short winter days don’t help either. Porto gets only about 9 hours 15 minutes of daylight in December, and a full Porto–Régua sailing takes most of a day.
| Operator | Product | Season start | Season end | Price (from) | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cruzeiros Douro | Porto–Régua–Porto, upstream by boat | April | October | €74–75 | 2026 listing |
| Cruzeiros Douro | Porto–Régua–Porto, downstream by boat | April | October | €68 (weekday) | 2026 listing |
| Cruzeiros Douro | Saturday Porto–Régua with winery visit | April | December | €98 | 2026 listing |

Prices and dates are from operator or reseller pages checked in early October 2026. Most products need a minimum number of passengers, and the listings that run to December in particular can be cancelled at short notice, so confirm when booking.
How to read this table:
- Late October is realistically the last safe week for a full-day cruise. Cruzeiros Douro’s core products stop in October, and Rota do Douro’s 2026 Sunday sailing ends on 25 October. For an October date, the Porto–Régua–Porto upstream Douro cruise is bookable on GetYourGuide (4.3/5 from more than 750 reviews).
- November is possible but thin. Roteiro do Douro sells some products until the end of November. One reseller listing (Porto Douro) shows upstream departures on 4 and 11 November, but we couldn’t confirm the year, so treat it as an example only.
- December cruises exist only on paper for most travellers. The two listings that run from April to December (Cruzeiros Douro’s Saturday cruise and Roteiro do Douro’s Régua–Porto) are the exceptions. Book them only with a firm written confirmation for your exact date and a clear refund policy.
- January and February: nothing scheduled that we could find.
If your dates are fixed in winter, switch to a Douro day tour that includes a short boat trip. It gives you the vineyards, the tastings and time on the water, without depending on the locks. The Douro Valley tour with a boat trip, wine tasting and lunch starts at $63 and is rated 4.7/5 from more than 23,000 reviews; it visits two wine estates and includes an hour on the river. The 2 Wine Regions, Farm-to-Table Lunch & Boat tour costs more, from $103, and adds a Vinho Verde estate (4.8/5 from more than 9,200 reviews).

Multi-day river cruise ships: when the season ends
Ship-based Douro cruises follow the same calendar. Cruise Critic describes a season “typically beginning in late March and running into November, though Viking has sailings into December”. Emerald advertises its Portugal river cruises from March to November.
What the 2026/27 calendars show:
- CroisiEurope shows Porto–Douro departures on 26 and 27 October 2026. Reseller listings add sailings on 1, 6, 7 and 11 November 2026 on ships such as the Infante Don Henrique, Fernão de Magalhães and Vasco da Gama. Its 2027 Douro season reopens with departures from 20–21 March 2027.
- One cruise aggregator lists a 16 December 2026 CroisiEurope Porto–Régua–Porto Antigo–Porto departure. CroisiEurope says it runs special Christmas and New Year cruises, and it has run a four-day New Year’s Eve Douro sailing on the MS Miguel Torga in the past (29 December 2020). Treat any festive Douro departure as rare and confirm it directly with the line.
- Viking sails the Douro into late November. One travel writer describes a late-November voyage on the Viking Hemming. We found no Viking Christmas or New Year Douro sailing.
- AmaWaterways and Uniworld: we didn’t verify their 2026/27 end dates. Their Douro seasons broadly follow the same March–November pattern, so confirm when booking.
If you want to sleep on the river, book October or the first half of November. From December to mid-March, assume there is no ship.
Short cruises that do run all year
Pinhão one-hour rabelo boats
This is the best boat trip of the Douro winter. Small rabelo-style boats leave the Pinhão quays, sail upstream towards Quinta da Romaneira or Roncão, and return in about an hour, through a stretch of river you can’t see from the road.
- Cruzeiros Douro, Pinhão–Romaneira–Pinhão: €15, and the operator says it “takes place throughout the year”. From November to March, departures run every half-hour from 11:00 to 16:00 (April to October, 10:00–17:30). Companion dogs are allowed.
- Living Tours (one-hour rabelo): from November to March, hourly from 10:00 to 16:00. The last trip leaves at 16:00, and trips depend on weather and river conditions. A winter reviewer mentions blankets on board.
- Magnífico Douro: a reseller lists its one-hour trip at €12.50 per adult, €6.55 for children aged 5–11 and free for under-5s. Its 17:00 and 18:00 departures don’t run from November to March. Magnífico says it has open and closed rabelo boats so it can sail in any weather, and it also runs a two-hour trip to Tua (€30 on its own site). Prices differ between Magnífico’s site and resellers, so confirm when booking.
- Douro Wonders and others also sell Pinhão trips. Check the winter timetable on the day.
On GetYourGuide, the Pinhão: Douro River 50-min Boat Trip with Port Wine costs from $17 (4.7/5 from more than 430 reviews), and the quieter Pinhão: Douro River Solar Boat Tour with Wine Tasting costs from $22 (4.8/5 from more than 1,100 reviews). Pick your date on the listing to see which winter departure times are on sale.
Expect a quieter river, a covered cabin and a last boat around 16:00, which suits a train that arrives in late morning. More options are in our guide to Pinhão wine tours.
Régua short cruises: not in winter
This catches people out. Régua’s one-hour rabelo trips are seasonal. Cruzeiros Douro’s “Régua in Sight” (€13) and the one-hour Régua cruise sold through cruzeirosnodouro.pt both run from May to October only. In winter, base yourself in Pinhão for a boat trip, not Régua. Our guide to wine tasting in Peso da Régua covers what the town still offers off-season, including the Douro Museum.
Porto Six Bridges cruise
The 50-minute Six Bridges cruise between Porto and Gaia runs every day of the winter:
- Douro Azul: the winter timetable runs from November to February, with the first departure at 10:30 and the last at 16:30 (March to October, 10:30–18:30).
- Rota do Douro (through cruzeirosnodouro.pt): October to March, 11:00–16:00, departures every 30 minutes, from €18.
- Cruzeiros Douro: €18 from the Gaia pier, €20 from Ribeira. Children aged 4–12 pay half price and under-3s go free.
It is the easy fallback for a rainy week, and a good first-day activity before an early Douro train. On GetYourGuide, the 6 Bridges Cruise & Port Wine adds a glass of Port and is rated 4.9/5 from more than 1,900 reviews.
Festive cruises in Porto
For Christmas and New Year, the cruises are on the Porto–Gaia stretch, not in the valley. Operators run Christmas dinner cruises, and New Year’s Eve cruises such as Cruzeiros Douro’s New Year’s Eve Douro Ruby cruise (€209) and a Douro White 2026/27 gala cruise from €180. See our New Year’s Eve Porto wine cruise guide and Christmas in Porto and the Douro.
Weather cancellations: all short cruises depend on the weather. Most reseller listings promise a new date or a full refund if the operator cancels for weather. Read the policy before you buy.
Regular CP trains to Régua, Pinhão and Pocinho in winter
CP regional and inter-regional trains run on the Linha do Douro all year, from Porto São Bento (the city-centre station with the azulejo hall) via Campanhã, about eight minutes further on. Some trains terminate at Régua, so check that yours continues to Pinhão or Pocinho.
| Route | Typical journey time | Frequency | Fare (single, indicative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Porto São Bento → Régua | About 1h55 (IR); 2–3h (R) | Many daily departures; some terminate here | IR about €11.10 · R about €8.70 |
| Porto São Bento → Pinhão | About 2h15–2h25 | Roughly every two hours; a September 2026 timetable search showed 07:30, 09:30, 13:30 and 17:30 | IR about €12.45 |
| Porto São Bento → Pocinho | About 3h20 | Fewer; mostly the Pinhão trains continuing | IR about €15.10 |
Fares are from an independent 2026 guide, not CP. CP’s notice says new prices for all its services took effect on 1 January 2026, with an average increase of 2.26% (passes stayed the same price). Winter timetables can differ from summer ones, so check exact times and fares on cp.pt before travelling.
Heading east from Porto, sit on the right-hand side for the river views, especially after Mosteirô and all the way from Régua to Pinhão and Tua. Coming back, switch to the left.
Linha do Douro works: the big 2026/27 caveat
- Winter 2025/26: trains between Marco de Canaveses and Peso da Régua were suspended from 3 November 2025 to 2 April 2026, for tunnel works that are part of the electrification of the roughly 47 km section. Público reported the contract at €110.7 million over 36 months. CP ran direct buses between Caíde and Régua (about 1h20) plus stopping buses calling at every station from Marco (about 2h15), and Renascença reported that CP later raised this to 26 daily trips in each direction. Trains still ran between Porto and Marco and between Régua and Pocinho.
- Winter 2026/27: IP and CP describe a 36-month project with three interruption periods, scheduled for the winter months to limit the impact on tourism. Público reported in October 2025 that there would be another closure the following winter, and SAPO said a second total closure was planned “in the same period” a year later. As of 9 October 2026 we found no announced dates. Last year’s notice came out only about ten days before the closure (24 October for a 3 November start). Assume your winter train to Pinhão may include a bus leg between Caíde or Marco and Régua, which adds time, and check the cp.pt notices (“Avisos”) the week you travel.
- Storm disruption: after Storm Kristin on 28 January 2026, the Régua–Pocinho section was closed until Monday 9 March 2026, when Público reported that service resumed once rocks and earth that had fallen onto the track had been cleared. Winter storms can close the upper valley at short notice.
Holiday timetables (24, 25 and 31 December, 1 January)
CP usually publishes its Christmas and New Year arrangements in December. The usual pattern is reduced services from late afternoon on 24 and 31 December, and holiday timetables with fewer regional trains on 25 December and 1 January. Nothing specific to the Douro line had been published for 2026 when we checked. In Porto itself, Metro do Porto stopped at around 20:00 on 24 December last year. Don’t plan a late return from the valley on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Eve, and confirm when booking.
Best winter combinations
- Train, a Pinhão quinta lunch and a rabelo boat. The best-value car-free day, provided the trains are running normally. Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Roêda are a walk from Pinhão station, and Quinta das Carvalhas is just across the bridge. Check winter opening days and book tastings ahead.
- A guided Douro tour with a one-hour boat trip. The most reliable winter option: the transport is handled, the timings fit the daylight, and rail works don’t affect it. The Douro Valley tour with boat trip, wine tasting and lunch is the most-reviewed, and the Douro Valley tour with optional lunch, tastings and cruise starts lower, at $57 (4.7/5 from more than 9,300 reviews).
- A train-and-winery package. Some operators bundle the CP train with a guided winery visit. The Régua tour with a winery tasting, traditional lunch, river cruise and train starts in Régua, swaps its two-hour boat trip for a one-hour rabelo from November to March, and is rated 4.6/5 from more than 110 reviews. From Porto, the Full-Day Boat, Train, and Lunch Tour handles the whole day.
- A night in Pinhão. Stay one night and you can take the morning boat, visit two quintas and avoid the rush for the last train. Our guide to where to stay in Porto and the Douro Valley covers a night in the valley.
- A rainy day in Porto: the Six Bridges cruise plus the Port lodges in Gaia, which are all indoors. Our guide to the best Port wine tastings in Porto compares them.
A sample car-free winter day by train to Pinhão
Indicative only. Times follow recent timetable patterns, so confirm the actual winter timetable on cp.pt, and allow extra time if a rail-replacement bus is running.
- 09:30, Porto São Bento. Take the Pocinho- or Pinhão-bound train and sit on the right.
- About 11:45, arrive in Pinhão. Have a look at the station’s azulejo panels.
- 12:00, one-hour rabelo boat from the quay (winter departures run until about 16:00).
- 13:15, lunch in the village, or a booked tasting-and-lunch at a quinta within walking distance.
- 15:00, tasting at Quinta do Bomfim or Quinta da Roêda (book ahead; winter hours vary).
- 16:30, back at the station as the light fades. Winter sunsets come early.
- About 16:40–18:10, return train to Porto. Recent timetables show afternoon and early-evening departures from Pinhão, arriving in Porto about 2h20 later.
If the Marco–Régua bus replacement is in force, add about an hour each way. At that point a guided tour or a night in Pinhão makes more sense.
Weather and high-water warnings
Winter is the Douro’s flood season. Heavy Atlantic storms, plus water released from dams upstream, including on the Spanish side, can raise the river fast. When that happens, boats stop sailing, and the Régua and Porto Ribeira riverfronts can flood. The early-2026 storms (Kristin and the Marta depression) closed the Régua–Pocinho line for weeks and brought flood warnings to the river.
Practical rules:
- Book flexible. Choose products with free cancellation up to 24–48 hours ahead, and check the operator’s weather-cancellation clause.
- Check on the morning. Look at IPMA weather warnings, cp.pt notices and the operator’s own page or WhatsApp before you leave Porto.
- Have a Plan B in Porto: the Six Bridges cruise, the Port lodges in Gaia, or a tour that swaps the boat for an extra tasting.

FAQ
Can you do a Porto to Régua river cruise in winter? Mostly no. The big full-day Porto–Régua cruises run roughly from March or April to October or November, because the dam locks close for maintenance and the weather turns. Cruzeiros Douro runs its Porto–Régua cruise from April to October only. A few Régua–Porto and Saturday products are listed into December, but they depend on minimum numbers, so confirm before booking.
Does the Douro Historic Train run in winter? No. In 2026 CP’s Historic Douro Train runs from 6 June to 18 October, with 51 trips between Régua and Tua. We found no Christmas or winter historic train for 2026/27.
Can you take a boat trip in Pinhão in winter? Yes. One-hour rabelo boat trips from Pinhão run all year. Cruzeiros Douro lists €15 per person, with winter departures (November to March) between 11:00 and 16:00. Trips can be cancelled in bad weather or high water.
Can you cruise the Douro in November? In early November, sometimes. Roteiro do Douro sells some Porto–Régua products to the end of November, and multi-day ships such as CroisiEurope’s sail into November. From December to February your realistic options are short cruises: the Pinhão rabelo and Porto’s Six Bridges cruise.
Do trains run from Porto to Pinhão in winter? Yes, CP regional trains run all year. However, in winter 2025/26 the Marco de Canaveses–Régua section was closed from 3 November to 2 April for electrification works, and Público reported replacement buses taking about 1h20 direct from Caíde, or about 2h15 calling at every station from Marco. A second winter closure is planned, with no dates announced yet. Check cp.pt before you travel.
Is there a river cruise at Christmas or New Year’s Eve in the Douro? Not in the valley, but yes in Porto. Operators run Christmas dinner cruises and New Year’s Eve cruises on the Porto–Gaia stretch, such as Cruzeiros Douro’s New Year’s Eve Douro Ruby cruise at €209. Multi-day festive Douro sailings are rare, so check each cruise line’s calendar.
Does the Six Bridges cruise run in winter? Yes, every day. Douro Azul’s winter timetable (November to February) has the first departure at 10:30 and the last at 16:30, and Rota do Douro sails from October to March between 11:00 and 16:00. Prices start at €18.
Facts last checked in early October 2026, against CP’s 2026 Historic Train announcement, operator websites (Cruzeiros Douro, Roteiro do Douro, Rota do Douro, Douro Azul, Living Tours and Magnífico Douro resellers), CroisiEurope and cruise-aggregator calendars, and Portuguese press coverage (Público, RTP, SAPO, Observador) of the Linha do Douro works and storm closures. Seasons, prices and timetables change, so always confirm when booking. We will update this page when IP and CP announce the 2026/27 Marco–Régua closure dates.
