Christmas in Porto & the Douro for Wine Lovers: Cellar Hours, Christmas Cruises & Festive Tastings (2026)

Christmas in Porto 2026: which Port cellars open on 24, 25 and 26 December, Christmas markets and lights, December dinner cruises, Douro day trips, festive menus and transport.

Updated October 2026

Quick answer: Christmas in Porto works well for wine lovers if you plan around one rule: 24 December is a half-day, 25 December is mostly closed, and 26 December is back to (nearly) normal. Most Gaia Port lodges open on Christmas Eve but close on Christmas Day: Cockburn’s, Cálem, Sandeman and Graham’s all close on the 25th, and Cálem, Ramos Pinto and Poças also close on the 24th. Taylor’s is the big house that opens on Christmas Day, with its cellars listed at 12:00–18:00. Christmas dinner cruises run on set December evenings, not on the 24th or 25th. Save your Douro day trip for 23, 26 or 27 December.

Christmas in Porto is quieter, cheaper and more local than New Year’s Eve. The city lights up its streets, the Aliados tree glows over the avenue, and the Port lodges across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia smell of old wood and tawny. The catch is opening hours. Families gather for the consoada on the evening of the 24th, and much of the city shuts on the 25th.

This guide shows what’s open, when to book and how to build a wine-focused Christmas week from 22 to 27 December. Every 2026 detail below is marked as published for 2026 or as last year’s pattern.

What’s open on 24, 25 and 26 December: the quick version

  • 24 December (Thursday in 2026): most cellars open, some with shorter hours. Markets and shops wind down in the afternoon. Metro do Porto’s last departures leave at about 20:00 on all lines. Restaurants mostly close in the evening unless they serve a set Christmas Eve dinner.
  • 25 December (Friday): a public holiday, and most cellars, markets and shops close. Hotels, some WOW restaurants, a handful of cafés and Taylor’s cellars stay open. The Metro starts at about 09:00.
  • 26 December (Saturday): not a public holiday in Portugal. Cellars reopen at winter hours, Douro day tours run, and the city feels normal again.
  • 31 December: see our New Year’s Eve in Porto guide for the river cruises, and New Year’s Eve in the Douro Valley for the quinta packages.

December days are short. Around the 21 December solstice Porto gets roughly 9 hours 15 minutes of daylight, and the sun sets just after 17:00 all month, so put river views and walks in the morning and save cellar visits for the afternoon.

What this means for you: if Christmas Day is your only free day, Taylor’s is your best bet. Otherwise, plan cellar visits for 23 December, the morning of the 24th and 26 December. Book any tour of Graham’s or Cockburn’s, because both require reservations in winter.

Christmas markets & lights in Porto

Porto’s Christmas season officially starts when the lights go on at Avenida dos Aliados. In 2025 that happened on the evening of 29 November, with a free concert by fadista Mariza and the Orquestra Jovem do Porto. According to Notícias ao Minuto, the city lit 94 streets at a cost of €700,000, and the lights stayed on until 6 January.

The Árvore de Natal (Christmas tree) stands at the top of the Aliados. It’s the city’s favourite Christmas photo spot, and most visitors pass it on the way to dinner.

Across the river, WOW (World of Wine) runs its own “WOW, é Natal” programme with a 13-metre tree, a Parisian carousel, a craft market, a food market and Santa’s House. The 2025 tree was lit on 22 November, and the programme ran until 6 January.

Tip: Mercado do Bolhão is the best place in Porto to buy last-minute cheese, cured meats and a bottle for the consoada. It closes on Sundays and public holidays, so it will be shut on the 25th; check its Christmas Eve hours before you go.

Christmas cruises in Porto & the Douro

Christmas dinner cruises are a December tradition in Porto, but they run before Christmas week. These are the 2026 sailings published so far:

  • Christmas Dinner Cruise (Roteiro do Douro): 4 hours, boarding at Cais da Estiva at 19:30 and back at 23:45, with dinner and a DJ. €57 per adult, children 4–11 half price. 2026 dates: 7, 11, 12, 18 and 19 December. Cruzeiros Douro sells the same evenings as its “Vintage Christmas Cruise”, also at €57.
  • Ruby Christmas Cruise (Cruzeiros Douro): 3 hours from the Marina do Freixo pier at 20:00, €45 (meat) or €48 (fish), with shared tables and a minimum number of guests. 2026 dates: 4, 5, 11, 12, 18 and 19 December.

These dinner cruises are sold directly by the operators; neither GetYourGuide nor Viator listed them when we checked, so book on the operator’s website.

The Six Bridges cruise over Christmas: the standard 50-minute bridges cruise runs year-round, weather permitting. We found no operator confirming sailings on 25 December, so assume it won’t run and treat a Christmas Day sailing as a bonus. On 24 and 26 December it should run a normal winter schedule. The Seven Bridges cruise with Port wine (4.9/5 from more than 1,900 reviews) adds a glass of Port on board; confirm your date when you book.

See every year-round option in our guide to the best Douro River wine cruises.

The Douro Valley at Christmas

The Douro in late December is bare-vined, misty and beautiful, with copper terraces, wood smoke and empty roads. It’s also the hardest week of the year to find open quintas. Most wineries close on 25 December and many on the 24th too. Some close for longer: Quinta Nova’s own wine-tourism page lists a closing period from 23 to 27 December and on 1 January.

Christmas packages at Douro hotels (from past seasons):

  • The Vintage House (Pinhão): Christmas Eve dinner from 19:00, with canapés, bacalhau and desserts, wines included. €78 per person (children 4–11 €39). The offer is undated and may be from 2025, so confirm.
  • Douro Palace Hotel Resort & Spa (Baião): Christmas package of €229 (1 night), €285 (2 nights) or €339 (3 nights) per person sharing, including the Christmas Eve dinner, Christmas lunch and the spa relaxation area. The offer is undated and likely from a past season.
  • Six Senses Douro Valley (Lamego): a traditional Christmas Eve dinner using regional produce and wines, plus Midnight Mass at Lamego Cathedral. No public price was available.
  • Vidago Palace: runs a seasonal Christmas programme, but we found no published price.

Day trips: 26 December isn’t a public holiday, so most Douro day tours from Porto run on 23, 26 and 27 December. Book a tour that names its quintas, and ask the operator to confirm they’re open that day. The full-day Douro Valley tour with boat, wine tasting and lunch (4.7/5 from more than 23,000 reviews) runs all year from Porto; for a quieter day, the private Douro wine tour with lunch and a boat trip (4.9/5 from more than 170 reviews) lets you ask for estates that are open that week.

Read more in our Douro Valley in winter guide, which lists the estates that stay open from November to February.

Portuguese Christmas food & wine pairings

The consoada, the family meal on the night of 24 December, is the heart of Christmas in Portugal. In the north it centres on bacalhau (salt cod) boiled with potatoes, Portuguese cabbage, eggs and plenty of olive oil, often finished with garlic. On the 25th, lunch is often roupa velha (leftover cod and cabbage fried with garlic), roast turkey, kid goat or octopus.

How to pair it:

  • Bacalhau with potatoes and olive oil: a mineral, oak-touched Douro white cuts through the oil. If you prefer red, choose a lighter, fresher Douro red over a heavy blockbuster.
  • Roupa velha or roast kid: a structured Douro red based on Touriga Nacional or Touriga Franca.
  • Rabanadas (fried bread soaked in wine or milk, then sugared and spiced): a 10-year-old tawny, or a Moscatel do Douro from Favaios.
  • Bolo rei (the crown-shaped cake studded with candied fruit and nuts): a 20-year-old tawny. Its nutty, dried-fruit notes echo the cake.
  • Sonhos, aletria and pão de ló: a white Port or a lighter tawny.

Want to take some home? Most Gaia lodges sell bottles at the end of the tasting, and many will tell you how to pack them for the flight.

Christmas Eve & Christmas Day dinners and lunches in Porto

Book ahead, as set menus sell out by early December.

  • The Yeatman (Gaia): Christmas Eve dinner on 24 December at 19:30, €295 per person with wines included in 2025 (children 4–11 €147.50; under-4s free). Christmas lunch on 25 December has cost about €135–€140 per person with wines in recent seasons. Confirm the 2026 menus and prices.
  • WOW restaurants (Gaia): in past years most WOW restaurants served à la carte lunch on 24 December, and selected venues such as T&C and Barão Fladgate served set Christmas Eve dinners. In 2024, Viaje Comigo reported that T&C and Barão Fladgate opened for the consoada, while T&C, 1828, Pip, Golden Catch and Root&Vine took Christmas lunch bookings. Exact venues vary by year, so confirm.
  • City-centre hotels: many five-star hotels (Pestana, InterContinental and others) publish Christmas menus from November. We haven’t listed prices we couldn’t verify, so check each hotel directly.

If you’d rather toast Christmas in a cellar, our guide to the best Port wine tastings in Porto lists the tasting rooms and their premium flights.

A Christmas-week Porto & Douro itinerary (22–27 December)

22 December (Tuesday): arrive and see the lights Check in, walk Ribeira at golden hour, then head up to the Aliados tree once the lights come on. Have dinner downtown.

23 December (Wednesday): Douro day trip This is the last reliable pre-Christmas day for quinta visits. Expect a full day with a river cruise, two quintas and lunch on a Douro Valley day tour, back in Porto by early evening.

24 December (Thursday): cellars in the morning, consoada at night Visit Bolhão in the morning for festive shopping. Cross to Gaia for an early cellar visit at Taylor’s or Sandeman (not Cálem, Ramos Pinto or Poças, which close that day). Book a Christmas Eve dinner, and remember the Metro stops at about 20:00.

25 December (Friday): slow Christmas Take a riverside walk and have a long lunch at a hotel or a WOW restaurant. Taylor’s cellars open from 12:00. Finish with a stroll under the lights.

26 December (Saturday): Gaia lodge crawl Most cellars are back to normal. Pair a guided tour at Graham’s or Cockburn’s, booked ahead, with a premium tasting, then catch sunset from Jardim do Morro.

27 December (Sunday): Douro or Porto Take a second Douro trip, or pick a cellar from our best Port wine tastings guide (Poças is closed on Sundays). For more ideas, see the 10 best wine experiences in Porto and the Douro Valley.

Where to stay: Ribeira and Baixa put you within walking distance of the lights and markets, and Gaia puts you next to the lodges. Pestana Vintage Porto and Hotel Carris Porto Ribeira are on the Ribeira waterfront, and The Yeatman sits above the Gaia lodges. Our guide to where to stay in Porto and the Douro Valley compares the neighbourhoods.

Getting around on 24 & 25 December

  • Metro do Porto: last departures on 24 December leave at about 20:00 on all lines. JPN reported that in 2025 they ran between 20:00 and 20:30, the latest being Line F (Senhora da Hora to Fânzeres) at 20:24. On 25 December service started at about 09:00.
  • STCP buses: in 2025, buses ran a Saturday timetable on 24 December until about 18:30 and were then progressively withdrawn. On 25 December they ran the holiday timetable, with the night network operating. Historic trams restarted in the early afternoon on Christmas Day.
  • CP trains (Douro line): expect reduced holiday services on 24 and 25 December. Check cp.pt before planning a self-guided Douro trip.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: available but scarcer and pricier on Christmas Eve night. Book a ride back from dinner in advance.

Rainy-day backup

December in Porto is often wet. Cellar tours are ideal in the rain, and the WOW museums (4.6/5 from more than 250 reviews for the day pass) are all indoors.

FAQ

Are Port wine cellars open on Christmas Day? Most are not. Cockburn’s, Cálem, Sandeman and Graham’s close on 25 December, and Cálem, Ramos Pinto and Poças close on both 24 and 25 December. Taylor’s lists its Gaia cellars open from 12:00 to 18:00 on Christmas Day, although its city-centre shop closes, so confirm the hours before you go.

What’s open in Porto on Christmas Eve? Most cellars open, some with shorter hours, though Cálem, Ramos Pinto and Poças close. Markets and shops wind down in the afternoon, the Metro runs until about 20:00, and in the evening almost only hotels and restaurants serving set dinners stay open.

What can I do in Porto on 25 December? Plan a slow day: a riverside walk, a hotel or WOW lunch (book ahead), a Taylor’s cellar visit from 12:00 and the Christmas lights after dark. The Metro starts at about 09:00 and STCP runs a holiday timetable.

When is the Porto Christmas market in 2026? The 2026 dates have not been announced yet. In 2025 the city’s lights went on on 29 November, the Cordoaria market ran until 30 December, the Batalha market from 28 November to 28 December, and WOW’s programme from 22 November to 6 January.

Are there Christmas cruises in Porto? Yes, on set December evenings. Roteiro do Douro’s 2026 Christmas dinner cruise sails on 7, 11, 12, 18 and 19 December at €57 per adult, and the Ruby Christmas Cruise (€45–€48) adds 4 and 5 December. Don’t expect cruises on 24 or 25 December.

Do Douro Valley wine tours run between Christmas and New Year? Many day tours from Porto run on 26 and 27 December, because 26 December is not a public holiday in Portugal, but some quintas close. Quinta Nova, for example, lists a closing period of 23–27 December and 1 January. Book a tour that names its quintas and confirm they’re open.

What do Portuguese people eat at Christmas? Christmas Eve (the consoada) centres on boiled bacalhau with potatoes, cabbage, eggs and olive oil. Desserts include rabanadas (fried, sugared bread soaked in wine or milk) and bolo rei. An aged tawny goes very well with the sweets.

Facts last checked on 6 October 2026. Most 2026 Christmas hours, market dates and menus are published in November, so entries marked “confirm” or labelled 2025 show last year’s pattern. Always confirm hours and prices directly with the venue when booking.
